Michael Browning - Built for Speed
Ever since I could read automotive publications like Road and Track, Car & Driver and Hot Rod magazine I have had a deep passion for race cars and all types of racing. My first up close experience was a trip with my dad to the drag race track near my Las Vegas home. That motivated me to build cars and do some racing myself. Before long those skills, interest and ability took me to the Winternationals in Pomona, California. While there I was asked me to work for a top Pro team as their crew chief and left college to follow my dreams.
My next step was to work with Chrysler backed, Pro Stock driver, Butch Leal and this was followed by a transfer to High Point, NC to work for the famed Sox and Martin team. After a successful run as crew chief my dad, uncle and I ran our own Pro Stock Hemi Dart in NHRA and IHRA. We had considerable success on the track but found it difficult to win the eternal search for sponsorship and it was then that I went back to college to prepare for a life in the medical field.
My personal need for speed remained and, while balancing career and family, I transitioned from drag racing to sports cars initially running a Porsche in SCCA autocross trials starting in 1972. Since then I have competed in and won a variety of amateur and professional races and championships at both the local and national level and worked as a driving coach helping to develop some of America's brightest young talent.
Currently I will be racing in one of the most exciting NASA classes called Honda Challenge. This class has been seen a rebirth that has all types of Honda's competing in an exciting door-to-door racing sprint format. The cars are classed by HP/Weight and this makes for very close and exciting racing. This is where the driver truly can make the difference in the outcome. The goal is to run at the NASA Nationals that will be at the Mid Ohio Sportscar track in Lexington Ohio on September 6-9. The NASA Nationals will attract over 40 cars in the competitive H2 class. I will be running a 1997 Honda Civic Sedan in the H2 class with a strong chance to run for the championship. It will feel good to be back in a Honda again since I have had a long history driving these FWD cars winning many races and several championships. I believe that I will have an excellent chance to bring home a victory.
